A series of posts by local figure Asom D. Jerry on social media have sparked outrage and concern over alleged financial mismanagement and harsh working conditions at Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi. The posts, shared earlier today, claim that the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of BSUTH is deducting 6,000 naira from staff salaries each time they arrive late to work, a policy that has left employees fearful and uncertain.

Jerry’s posts highlight a troubling lack of transparency, asserting that staff are unaware of where the deducted funds are directed—whether to a personal account or a government account. He further criticizes the absence of clear civil service rules governing such deductions, calling it a matter requiring urgent investigation. The posts also suggest that the policy may not suit the local context, drawing a comparison to practices studied in India that may not be applicable in Nigeria.

Adding to the controversy, Jerry alleges that staff salaries fluctuate unpredictably, describing the situation as chaotic and unfair. He accuses the CMD of imposing severe penalties, including salary cuts for being as little as one minute late, labeling it “wickedness.” The posts also mention the challenging economic realities faced by staff, some of whom bring their children to work due to early school hours, yet still face these deductions.

The allegations have raised questions about the CMD’s suitability for public office, with Jerry suggesting he should manage a private hospital instead. No official response from BSUTH or the CMD has been recorded as of yet, and Jerry has called for evidence to substantiate the claims.

The community awaits further clarification, with many urging an independent review to address the staff’s concerns and ensure accountability.
