The Executive Chairman of Tarka Local Government Council in Benue State, Mr. Raphael Yenge, has ordered the immediate suspension of all activities of the Mbakor Youth Association, citing security concerns in the Mbakor community. The directive, announced on December 20, 2025, affects all meetings, events, and operations of the association, currently led by Mr. Aondover Akpera, and will remain in effect until a comprehensive security review is completed.
In a statement issued on Friday, Yenge explained that the decision stemmed from reports highlighting potential risks to the safety and well-being of residents in the Mbakor area. The suspension is intended to allow authorities to assess and address any underlying issues that could threaten public peace.
Additionally, the council chairman imposed a ban on the use of knockout shots—commonly known as firecrackers or bangers—throughout the local government area during the ongoing Yuletide period. This measure aims to prevent disturbances, accidents, and unnecessary panic, as the loud explosions can often be mistaken for gunshots amid heightened security awareness across Nigeria.
The directive was formalized in a letter signed by the Council Secretary, Mrs. Thelma Nguuma Chieryol, and took effect from December 19, 2025. Yenge emphasized that compliance is mandatory, warning that any violations would be dealt with in accordance with the law. He also instructed relevant security agencies to enforce the orders strictly to ensure peace and public safety.
Tarka LGA, home to the Mbakor people of Tiv extraction, has seen the council under Yenge’s leadership focus on community development and security initiatives in recent months. This latest action aligns with broader efforts in several Nigerian states to restrict fireworks and similar items during the festive season, prioritizing calm celebrations. Residents have been urged to report any breaches to authorities as the Christmas and New Year festivities continue.
