A former councillor representing Awume-Icho Ward in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State, Daniel Ujah, has been remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre over allegations of assault, torture and attempted culpable homicide involving a woman. Ujah, 43, was arraigned before Upper Area Court 2 in Otukpo on a First Information Report marked CR33/2026 filed by the Nigeria Police.
The police accused him of criminal trespass, intimidation, use of criminal force and assault, causing grievous hurt and attempting to commit culpable homicide. According to the FIR, the case followed a petition by Rebecca Adole, who alleged that Ujah entered the compound of her mother, Amina Iduh, at Akwutolo Awume village on August 28, 2026.
The police further alleged that Ujah repeatedly assaulted Iduh before pushing her into a fire, causing injuries to her body and burning her clothes. The victim was subsequently taken to a hospital in Onyangede, Ohimini Local Government Area, for treatment. The FIR also claimed that Ujah threatened the woman and stated that nothing would happen to him even if he killed her.
When the case came up for mention before Magistrate Hasia Garuba, Ujah pleaded not guilty to the allegations. His counsel, Rev. O. Simon, who held brief for P.O. Ella, applied for bail on his behalf. Prosecuting counsel, Inspector Nancy Alechenu, opposed the application. In her ruling, Garuba ordered that Ujah be remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre pending further proceedings. The court adjourned the case until September 22, 2026, for further mention.
