Two children from North Bank in Makurdi who were earlier reported missing have returned home, the family has announced.
According to a statement by Zege’Orkwande Sughnen Yaaya, the children, identified as Iveren and her younger sister, arrived back at the house around midday. The eldest, Iveren, recounted that she heard a knock on the gate and, upon opening it, a woman touched her head, complimented her and asked the children to follow her. They were taken to a park and later transported to an unfamiliar location where they slept in an unkempt house in a bush area with many other children.
Early the following morning while it was still dark, Iveren said her senses began to return and she managed to escape with her little sister. The children reached home tired, in dirty clothes, after a long trek. Their disappearance had earlier been reported at C Division police station, and the family took them back there upon their return as the investigation remains ongoing.
The development has prompted a renewed call for parents in Makurdi and other areas to exercise extreme caution with underage children, with the family noting that child trafficking remains a real threat.
