Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia of Benue State has expressed determination to continue transforming the state, stating he is undeterred by attacks and opposition as he eyes a second term in 2027.

The governor made the declaration at the Government House in Makurdi after receiving the All Progressives Congress (APC) Expression of Interest and Nomination forms purchased on his behalf by two major groups: the Benue State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), led by Chairman Michael Vembe, and the Benue Motorcycle Association (BEMOA), led by State President Comrade Terfa Aha.

In his remarks, Governor Alia thanked the groups for the confidence reposed in his leadership and assured them of his administration’s commitment to people-oriented projects that directly impact the lives of the masses.

The governor used the occasion to announce renewed plans for the revitalization of Taraku Mills, describing the agro-processing facility as a critical component of his economic strategy. He said the move aims to restore industrial activity, generate employment opportunities, and strengthen Benue’s agro-based economy.

He disclosed that the initiative is part of broader efforts to reposition the state for sustainable growth. Recent reports indicate that reconstruction and refurbishment work at the long-moribund soybean processing plant in Gwer East LGA is currently in progress.

Governor Alia highlighted several achievements of his administration, including prompt and regular payment of salaries, pensions, and gratuities (a departure from previous irregularities, as noted by the groups), expansion of road infrastructure including rural and township roads, improvements in the health and education sectors, and provision of solar lights to enhance nighttime security.

The leaders of NUP and BEMOA, in their separate remarks, cited these developments particularly the regular payment of pensions and salaries, road construction, and security enhancements as key reasons why Governor Alia deserves a second term.

While reaffirming his resolve to deliver tangible results, the governor acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, especially in enhancing the security of lives and property, which he described as vital for successful governance.

He also revealed that he has written to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, requesting a meeting of the entire Benue APC family to resolve differences and present a united front for the 2027 general elections.

Governor Alia emphasized that a reformer must expect challenges, including insults and deliberate attempts to deter progress, but maintained that he remains focused on turning around the fortunes of Benue State until it regains its rightful position among states in Nigeria.

The event, which comes shortly after the 2026 May Day celebrations, signals early momentum for Governor Alia’s re-election bid within the APC. It showcases grassroots support from pensioners and commercial motorcyclists (popularly known as Okada riders), two influential groups in the state.

Sir Tersoo Kula, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, issued the official press statement, which was shared on social media on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

The revitalization of Taraku Mills has been a recurring campaign promise since Alia assumed office. While critics have questioned the pace of work in the past, the governor’s latest announcement and reports of ongoing reconstruction suggest renewed emphasis on this agro-industrial project as part of efforts to boost local manufacturing and job creation in the state’s agriculture-rich economy.

This development adds to the growing political discourse around the 2027 gubernatorial race in Benue State, with supporters describing Alia’s re-election as increasingly likely based on his administration’s performance in key sectors.
