Fatal Road Accident Claims Four Lives, Injures Several Others at Ahumbe Along Makurdi Road

A tragic road traffic crash at Ahumbe in Mbambur, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, has claimed the lives of four persons, including the driver, while leaving four others seriously injured.

The accident occurred on the morning of Saturday, February 28, 2026, along the route from Aliade to Makurdi. Eyewitness accounts and social media reports indicate that the vehicle—a commercial pickup—lost control and crashed, resulting in the instant death of the driver, identified as Depuun Atu, and three passengers.

Four other occupants sustained severe injuries and were promptly conveyed to a nearby hospital by operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Aliade Command for medical attention.

The scene attracted a large crowd of sympathisers and onlookers, with images circulating online showing the mangled wreckage of the vehicle and the chaotic aftermath. Community members have described the crash as one of the most devastating on that stretch of road in recent months.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the exact cause of the accident, but preliminary information points to possible speeding, loss of control, or mechanical failure. The FRSC has been commended for its swift response in rescuing the injured and securing the scene.
