A chilling eyewitness account has emerged from one of the survivors of yesterday’s armed attack on a Benue Links commercial bus near Otukpo, as passengers relive the horrifying ordeal that left three people injured.
In a video interview circulating widely on social media and shared by BENUE info-pedia late on January 10, 2026, a visibly shaken female passenger described the moment armed men opened fire on the vehicle just after it passed through Otukpo around 7:00 pm. “We thought we would die,” she said, her voice trembling as she recounted the sudden burst of gunfire, the shattering of windows, and the panic that engulfed everyone on board.
The survivor, who was among those rushed to the Benue State Teaching Hospital Otukpo Annex for treatment, spoke of passengers screaming and ducking for cover as bullets tore through the bus. She praised the driver for managing to keep control of the vehicle long enough to reach a safer area despite the chaos.
The attack, which targeted the bus with registration number BUU 429 XB, resulted in injuries to three passengers. No fatalities were recorded, but the incident has once again highlighted the growing insecurity on major highways in Benue State, particularly routes frequently used by commercial transport operators.
Details about the attackers remain scarce, with no group claiming responsibility and authorities yet to release information on whether the motive was robbery, targeted assault, or something else. The swift medical response at the Otukpo Annex has been credited with preventing more serious outcomes for the injured.
The survivor’s emotional testimony has struck a deep chord online, with many residents expressing outrage over the repeated targeting of innocent commuters and calling for urgent deployment of more security personnel along intercity roads. Comments flooded in urging stronger patrols, better lighting on highways, and decisive action from both state and federal authorities to restore safety for travelers.
As the three injured passengers continue to receive care, the survivor’s words serve as a stark reminder of the fear and trauma ordinary citizens face daily on the roads of Benue State. “We were just going about our normal lives,” she added. “No one should have to experience this.”
The incident remains under investigation, with hopes that those responsible will be brought to justice swiftly. For now, the survivor’s harrowing account stands as a powerful appeal for peace and security on the highways that connect communities across the state.
