A disturbing video circulating widely on social media has reignited concerns over police extortion in Benue State, capturing what appears to be a uniformed officer openly collecting money from a commercial motorcycle (okada) rider in exchange for “safe passage”—a practice commonly known as bribery or “egunje.”

The incident, which occurred in Makurdi under the jurisdiction of the Benue State Police Command, was recorded by a passenger on the motorcycle. The footage shows the officer demanding and receiving cash before allowing the rider to proceed, an act described by observers as blatant exploitation of citizens already facing economic hardships.

The post highlighting the video condemns the behavior as yet another example of how some law enforcement personnel undermine public trust and damage the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force. It argues that such actions erode confidence in the institution at a time when citizens need reliable protection the most.

In a bold move to encourage accountability, the individual sharing the video has offered a ₦5,000 reward for credible information leading to the identification of the officer and the police station to which he is attached. Tips can be sent anonymously via WhatsApp to 09099467150, with assurances that informants will be strictly protected.

The exposure comes as a troubling start to 2026 for the Benue State Police Command and the broader Nigeria Police Force, highlighting persistent challenges in curbing roadside corruption despite repeated directives from higher authorities against extortion. As calls mount for swift investigation and disciplinary action, many hope this incident will prompt stronger measures to restore integrity and public faith in law enforcement across the state. Enough is enough, the post declares—Nigeria deserves better.
