A social media post by Facebook user Jerry Asom on January 6, 2026, has stirred controversy by alleging that the deteriorating security situation in Turan, located in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, is being driven by interests tied to local mineral resources. Asom specifically accused two appointees of Governor Hyacinth Alia—Hon. Bem Tseen and Hon. Agogo—of involvement in fueling the insecurity, claiming their activities are sponsored by Moses Ternenge, described as a close associate of the governor.
The post, which quickly gained traction online, remains unverified, with no independent confirmation from authorities or the named individuals as of January 7, 2026. Attempts to obtain comments from those mentioned were unsuccessful. Kwande LGA has long been known as a mining hub in Benue, with past issues around illegal gold mining contributing to tensions, though previous administrations had imposed suspensions on such activities to curb security breaches.
Residents of Turan continue to voice growing concerns over escalating violence and instability in the area, urging relevant authorities to launch prompt investigations into the claims and take decisive steps to restore calm and protect lives. While Benue State has faced broader security challenges in recent years, including herder-farmer clashes and banditry, these specific allegations add to ongoing debates about governance, resource management, and public safety under the current administration. As reactions pour in on social media, many call for transparency and accountability to prevent further escalation.
