In a surprising twist that underscores the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, Dr. Terhemen Tarzoor, the former Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly and one-time gubernatorial candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has publicly endorsed Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for a second term. Speaking at a World Press Conference organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Benue State Council at the NUJ House in Makurdi on Monday, October 27, 2025, Tarzoor praised what he described as a “renaissance” in Benue governance, citing visible transformations and a genuine commitment to service across the state.
Tarzoor, who contested against Alia in the 2023 gubernatorial election under the PDP banner before the latter’s victory on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, urged citizens to rally behind the governor’s ongoing development agenda. “Today, I find immense joy and reassurance in seeing those same aspirations reflected so vividly in the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia,” he told journalists. He highlighted the renewed hope, smiles, and palpable satisfaction among Benue people as evidence of a government operating with sincerity, accountability, and a clear sense of purpose.
The former speaker delved into specifics, commending the Alia administration’s massive infrastructural strides, urban renewal in the capital city, and prudent management of state affairs. He pointed to improvements in road infrastructure, economic diversification, and the governor’s steadfast commitment to workers’ welfare as key achievements. “I wish to express my profound appreciation to Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia for his exemplary stewardship and to affirm my total and unwavering support for his administration. In light of these achievements, I wholeheartedly endorse Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia for a second term as Governor of Benue State,” Tarzoor declared.
Addressing rumors swirling in political circles, Tarzoor, a former Nigerian Ambassador, clarified that he is still consulting on a potential bid for the House of Representatives seat in the Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency and has not yet declared his intentions. He pledged to lend his voice, resources, and support to ensure the continuation and expansion of the progress witnessed under Governor Alia.
The event also featured warm remarks from Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, Chairman of the NUJ Benue State Council, who welcomed Tarzoor and acknowledged his long record as a seasoned statesman. Ugber emphasized the media’s critical role in democracy, stating, “The NUJ in Benue State has always maintained its commitment to fairness, professionalism, and objectivity in the discharge of our duties. We believe that democracy thrives best where there is a free, vibrant, and responsible press, one that informs, educates, and holds power to account.”
While assuring Tarzoor of the council’s dedication to responsible journalism, Ugber urged all political actors, including the visitor, to promote peace, unity, and issue-based politics. He seized the opportunity to appeal to the statesman for assistance in acquiring a Direct Ray Digital Image (DI) machine to enhance the professionalism of the Benue State Council.
This endorsement comes at a time when Benue State, often plagued by security challenges and economic hurdles, is seeing pockets of optimism under Alia’s priest-turned-politician leadership. Tarzoor’s cross-party support could signal broader alliances in the lead-up to future elections, potentially reshaping the political landscape in the food basket of the nation. As consultations continue and development projects roll out, all eyes will be on whether this unity call translates into sustained progress for Benue’s people.
