Suspected Herder Attack Claims One Life on Agagbe-Naka Road in Gwer West, Benue

Security operatives in Benue State are intensifying efforts to apprehend suspects following the fatal shooting of a local resident along the Agagbe-Naka-Agatu axis in Gwer West Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at approximately 6:01 p.m. on the Agagbe-Naka road. According to security sources, the victim, identified as Iorsugh Genabe, a resident of Naka, was attacked and killed by suspected armed herder bandits while traveling along the route.

Military personnel in the vicinity promptly raised the alarm, contacting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Naka Division via a distress call to report the attack. The DPO immediately mobilized a patrol team, supported by additional tactical units, and rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers recovered the victim’s body, which was subsequently deposited at the Agagbe mortuary pending autopsy. Police authorities later confirmed the recovery and the transfer of the remains.

The State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has since taken over the case for discreet and thorough investigation. Efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the perpetrators responsible for the killing.

Tuesday’s killing underscores the persistent security challenges in rural communities, despite repeated calls for sustained peace initiatives and stronger protective measures.
