In the wake of a tragic incident in Turan, Kwande Local Government Area, government officials have pledged support and accountability following a military-related incident that resulted in casualties and injuries. The Honourable Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, represented by Special Adviser Hon. Fidelis Fidelis Msughter Unongo, condemned the inhumane act and assured the community that justice will be served.
Hon. Unongo emphasized that no stone will be left unturned in the pursuit of justice, stating, “The Governor assures the families of the deceased and those receiving treatment at the hospital that the government will provide them with the necessary support to forge ahead.” He directed the immediate payment of medical bills for the injured and ordered the renovation of the burnt palace of the Mue Ter. Additionally, he instructed the KWUPO President, Aloko Nachi Simon, to file a complaint with the military, copying the Governor of Benue State.
The Turan youths and traditional rulers have noted their demands, which will be relayed to the Governor. However, in a dramatic turn, the youths denied Hon. Anyor Matu, representing Kwande East, the opportunity to speak, accusing him of abandoning them and attempting to score political points.
Traditional leaders, including HRH Engr. Timothy Ahire, Chairman of the Kwande Traditional Council, and Chief Festus Lorkya, President of the Turan Development Association, called for the withdrawal of the military. They expressed dissatisfaction with the Nigerian Army, alleging protection of bandits and attacks on innocent citizens. “The military is a threat to our security, but they’re also raping and killing our people,” Ahire said, demanding accountability and compensation for victims’ families.
A high-powered delegation, comprising government officials and security experts, visited Kwande on Thursday to condole with the people and assess damages. The delegation was warmly received by Hon. Vitalis Neji, Chairman of Kwande Local Government, who appreciated the Governor’s swift response. The President of the Kwande Youth Development Association, Comr. Aloko Nachi Simon, also praised the Governor’s support, urging the withdrawal of the military and deployment of more police. The DG Homeland Security, RTD Gbawuan, promised that erring officers would be held accountable.
This incident has sparked a call for peace and a reevaluation of security measures in the region, with the government committing to address the community’s grievances and ensure justice prevails.
