Tragedy struck the quiet Nyamatsoo Mbagen community in Buruku Local Government Area on Saturday night when a son, Ankyambe Tordue, allegedly used a machete to hack his elderly father, Ankyambe Hembaor, to death during a heated argument over money.
According to security expert Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. when Tordue demanded money from his father and was refused. In a fit of rage, he reportedly attacked the older man with the machete, inflicting fatal injuries.
Neighbours who heard the commotion rushed the bleeding victim to Agbecha Hospital in Nyamatsoo, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack and remains at large.
Police operatives from the Buruku Divisional Headquarters were quickly deployed, documented the crime scene, and moved the corpse to the hospital mortuary. The State Criminal Investigation Department has launched a full investigation, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend the fleeing son.
As of Monday, the Benue State Police Command had not issued an official statement, with the command’s spokesperson asking journalists to forward enquiries via text message.
The shocking incident has left the community in mourning and disbelief, with many describing the suspect as someone who had shown previous signs of aggression. Family members are yet to speak publicly as grief and fear grip the area.
Domestic disputes turning fatal are sadly not new, but a son raising a machete against his own father has sent chills across Benue. Residents are calling for swift justice if the suspect is arrested.
Rest in peace, Ankyambe Hembaor.
