Fresh eruptions of violence in the protracted Tiv-Jukun communal crisis have plunged communities across Taraba State into renewed fear and devastation, with reports of killings, arson, and mass displacement highlighting deep-rooted tensions over land ownership, political representation, and traditional authority.
The clashes, which have intensified with new incidents recorded between 2024 and 2025, are spreading across multiple local government areas including Wukari, Ibi, Takum, Ussa, Donga, Gassol, and Bali. Thousands of families, predominantly of Tiv origin, have reportedly fled their homes, abandoning farms and livelihoods in the process. Vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly are bearing the brunt of the escalating humanitarian crisis, facing acute hardships in displacement camps and host communities.
As the situation deteriorates, concerned stakeholders are urgently calling on the Federal Government, the governments of Taraba and neighboring Benue States, traditional rulers, and socio-cultural leaders to intervene decisively. Demands include bolstered security deployments, impartial administration of justice, and the pursuit of genuine, inclusive dialogue to address underlying grievances and foster lasting reconciliation.
From the heart of the affected communities, a resounding message emerges: the cycle of bloodshed must end immediately. Observers emphasize that peace can no longer be deferred, urging all parties to prioritize unity and coexistence in a region long plagued by intermittent conflicts that threaten lives, stability, and agricultural productivity in Nigeria’s North-East. The crisis underscores the need for sustainable solutions to prevent further loss and enable safe returns for the displaced.
