In Benue State, a case involving the prolonged detention of a 70-year-old widow has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for justice and compassion. Mama Rebecca Suswam, reportedly held in Gboko Prison for over six months, remains in custody due to a contentious land dispute that has dragged through the courts.

According to reports from community sources and family members, the disputed property was allegedly purchased more than 20 years ago by Mama Rebecca’s late husband. He reportedly built a house on the land before his passing. The trouble began when another claimant emerged, asserting ownership of the same property through different sources.

The opposing claimant has been identified as Mr. Mathias Mungwa, a retired military officer. He took the matter to court, where Mama Rebecca reportedly lost the initial suit despite presenting documents that her family believes confirm her ownership. An appeal has since been filed and is currently pending.

Family sources have voiced deep concern over her continued incarceration without bail, describing the situation as harsh and inhumane, particularly given her advanced age and deteriorating health. They highlight that she has only one child and limited support, which has worsened her conditions while behind bars.

Relatives have also alleged possible undue influence and unethical practices in the handling of the case, though these claims remain unverified as of the latest reports.

Community members and family relations, speaking to local outlets, have urged the judiciary, relevant authorities, and human rights organizations to urgently review the matter. They are calling for Mama Rebecca to be granted bail on humanitarian grounds while her appeal is properly determined.

“We are calling for justice, fairness, and compassion. This is an elderly woman whose health is failing. The law should protect her, not break her,” a family source stated.

The family has appealed to human rights groups and public-spirited Nigerians to intervene, emphasizing the need to uphold the dignity and rights of the elderly. Further inquiries can be directed to her granddaughter, Biem Elizabeth, at 08168297099.

As pressure continues to mount, observers are closely watching to see if authorities will act swiftly to ensure justice, fairness, and confidence in the rule of law in this troubling case. The situation underscores broader concerns about the treatment of vulnerable individuals in land-related disputes and the need for timely judicial compassion in such matters.
