Makurdi – Benue State is gearing up for what promises to be its most colourful and unifying cultural event in years – the “One Voice, One People, One Benue” Carnival of Unity, scheduled to hold at the popular IBB Square, Makurdi, starting from the 28th of December and running through the New Year.

Organisers say the carnival is designed to bring together the diverse ethnic nationalities of Benue – Tiv, Idoma, Igede, Etulo, Nyifon, and others – in a joyous celebration of shared heritage, peaceful coexistence, and collective pride, while showcasing the state’s rich cultural diversity to the rest of Nigeria and the world.

Imagine the rhythmic beats of Tiv swange blending seamlessly with Idoma ogba and Igede ikpahe dances under one sky, the aroma of pounded yam and okoho soup mixing with the sizzling scent of kyegh sha shwa, atar ker, pocho, and peppered bush meat, all served against the stunning backdrop of Benue’s famous black-and-white striped attire, angelic cloth, and other traditional regalia. That is the dream the carnival hopes to turn into reality.
