The newly elected Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Berger Alfred Emberga, is already facing significant political challenges, as reported by Asom D Jerry on a recent social media post. Just days into his tenure, a brewing clash between the Speaker and the de facto Governor of Benue State, Chief Moses Terenge, threatens to destabilize the assembly.
According to the post, “Reports indicate a brewing clash between the Speaker and the de facto Governor of Benue State, Chief Moses Terenge.” The tension escalated when lawmakers appointed Mr. Ochapa as Acting Deputy Clerk. However, Chief Terenge reportedly intervened, directing the Speaker to disregard this decision and install Mr. Adole as Deputy Clerk instead.

The situation took a dramatic turn when, as Asom D Jerry notes, “Chief Terenge reportedly called the Speaker, directing him to disregard the lawmakers’ decision and instead install one Mr. Adole as Deputy Clerk.” Adding to the pressure, Speaker Emberga was allegedly ordered by Chief Terenge to reverse the house’s decision by Monday, as failing to do so could lead to further conflict.
Public reaction on the platform has been swift, with Morris Bogbenda commenting, “Today or on Sunday. The letter which brought Mr. Ochapa as Acting Clerk was read on the floor of the house nau. Which one again?” This reflects the confusion and frustration among observers as the political standoff continues.
As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on the Benue State House of Assembly to see how Speaker Emberga will navigate this challenge. Will he comply with Chief Terenge’s directive, or will he stand firm with the lawmakers’ decision? The outcome could set a precedent for the balance of power in the region.
