For years, teachers in Benue’s public basic schools faced acute shortages, poor welfare packages, inadequate facilities, and recurring disruptions that weakened the education system. The current administration responded with a comprehensive agenda through the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

Key interventions include the recruitment and deployment of over 9,000 teachers to address manpower shortages, training and retraining of 8,572 teachers to improve instructional quality, and the provision of essential infrastructure such as over 7,000 whiteboards, 309 sets of teacher furniture, 93 offices, stores and staff rooms, and 340 modern toilet facilities. These improvements have created safer, healthier, and more productive working environments for educators.

On the welfare front, the government has ensured regular payment of salaries, implemented the ₦75,000 minimum wage, and harmonised the retirement age to provide greater career security. Additionally, the ₦150 million monthly School Grant Scheme now empowers head teachers and principals to respond promptly to school needs. The distribution of 23 motorcycles to Quality Assurance Heads has further strengthened school supervision and improved teaching standards across all 23 Local Government Areas.

These reforms are yielding visible results. Public school enrolment has risen significantly as parents regain trust in the quality of teaching and learning environments. SUBEB schools are now staffed by confident, motivated teachers inspiring learners to achieve greater academic excellence.

As stated in the official release, the impact extends beyond physical improvements: “A motivated teacher delivers better lessons; a well-supported school nurtures confident learners; and an empowered education workforce produces citizens equipped with the knowledge, skills and values needed to drive sustainable development.”

Even as challenges remain, the administration’s consistent support has been likened to holding an umbrella over the education sector during a storm. Benue SUBEB continues to drive these initiatives under Governor Alia’s leadership to secure a brighter future for the state’s children.
