Governor Alia Strengthens Ties with Tombo Community Through Development Initiatives

Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of rural communities with a series of major development projects for the Tombo community in Mbalagh. Announced on Friday, October 3, 2025, during a solidarity visit at Government House, Makurdi, the initiatives include the establishment of a new government secondary school, electrification projects, and critical road developments aimed at stimulating economic growth and improving living standards.

The visit, part of celebrations marking his two years in office, saw the traditional council, elders, and stakeholders from the Buruku Local Government Area express their gratitude for the governor’s impactful leadership. Addressing the delegation at the Old Banquet Hall, Governor Alia emphasized the pivotal roles of education, infrastructure, and electrification in enhancing the quality of life in rural areas. “The establishment of a government secondary school at Mbakyoongo in Tombo Mbalagh is a major step forward in ensuring that every child has access to quality education,” he stated. “This is about much more than building a school; it is about empowering our children with the tools they need to shape the future and contribute meaningfully to society. Education remains at the heart of our development agenda.”

The governor also announced that transformers and electrification works would soon begin in Tombo to ensure access to reliable electricity, promising to improve living standards and create new opportunities for small businesses and growth. Additionally, he highlighted the inclusion of major road projects, such as the Mkõvur-Anshav roads, in the 2025 budget as part of his administration’s wider infrastructure agenda. “These roads will not only connect communities but also facilitate trade and commerce, which are essential for economic growth. We are determined to ensure their completion,” Governor Alia assured.

The visit was marked by a warm reception, with the Tombo community presenting traditional gifts, including two native cattle, 10 bags of millet, and ceremonial attire, in which the governor was dressed as part of a cultural display. In a gesture of goodwill, Governor Alia donated 1,000 bags of 50kg rice and cash to the people of Tombo, recognizing their challenges and reaffirming his commitment to their welfare.

His Royal Highness, Chief James T. Nykwagha, Tyoar Mbakyoongo, the most senior traditional ruler in the Tiv nation, lauded Governor Alia for his steadfast dedication to rural advancement. Describing him as a visionary leader with transformative ideals, the revered monarch stated, “Governor Alia has distinguished himself as a true servant of the people. His leadership has become a beacon of hope, driving meaningful development across our communities.”

The event underscored a deep bond between the governor and the people of Tombo, with prominent attendees including the Buruku Local Government Chairman, Hon.
