Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has taken a major step toward addressing the perennial flooding problem in Makurdi with the commencement of construction on the Wurukum Canal project.

The initiative, which began on January 16, 2026, involves building a drainage canal stretching from the axis of Wurukum Market, passing between Benue Links Park and the Interdenominational Mission House, and ultimately channeling water directly into the River Benue.

According to reports from local media outlet Ohitty TV/Radio, the project is designed to serve as a critical flood-control measure. When fully completed, the canal will efficiently divert excess rainwater and runoff from the densely populated Wurukum area—long notorious for severe flooding during the rainy season—away from residential zones, markets, and key infrastructure, reducing the risk of property damage, displacement, and loss of life.

The groundbreaking event drew crowds of residents, community leaders, and onlookers who gathered to witness the start of work. Heavy machinery, including excavators and bulldozers, was on site, with dump trucks already moving earth and construction materials as crews began clearing and digging operations.

Governor Alia’s administration has repeatedly prioritized infrastructure development and disaster mitigation, particularly in the state capital, where flooding has disrupted livelihoods, damaged homes, schools, and businesses for years. The Wurukum Canal forms part of a broader strategy under the “Operation No More Flooding in Benue State,” aimed at creating sustainable drainage systems across vulnerable urban and rural areas.

Local residents have long called for decisive action on flooding, especially in low-lying neighborhoods like Wurukum, North Bank, and Wadata, which experience devastating inundation almost annually. The new canal is expected to significantly alleviate these challenges by providing a direct and controlled outflow to the River Benue, thereby minimizing overflow into built-up areas.

While the project is still in its early stages, officials have described it as a landmark effort that reflects the governor’s commitment to improving the living conditions of Makurdi residents. Completion is anticipated to bring lasting relief to thousands of households and businesses that have suffered repeated flood-related hardships.

The launch of the Wurukum Canal has been welcomed as a positive development in ongoing efforts to make Makurdi more resilient to climate-related challenges and seasonal flooding.
