Benue State Governor Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has assured traditional rulers in the state that they will begin enjoying a new remuneration package starting next month, September 2026. The announcement follows the conclusion of work by the committee set up to review the pay package for traditional rulers, which was headed by the Tor Sankera, Chief David Sevav.
The development comes as welcome news for traditional rulers who had previously been receiving modest stipends, with some earning as little as N30,000 per month. The upward review is expected to boost their self-esteem and motivate them towards enhanced service delivery in their respective domains.
Observers note that the capacity to address such welfare concerns forms part of the tools available to an incumbent governor in strengthening traditional institutions at critical times.
