Governor Hyacinth Alia has officially commenced the reconstruction of the State Secretariat Road, a major administrative artery in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.
The project, flagged off on February 11, 2026, targets one of the busiest corridors in the city, serving as a critical link to numerous government offices and institutions housed within the state secretariat complex. Authorities say the initiative is designed to ease chronic traffic congestion, improve safety for commuters, and provide smoother access for civil servants, visitors, and members of the public conducting official business.
According to state officials, the reconstruction forms part of a broader strategy by the Alia administration to rehabilitate and modernize key urban infrastructure across Makurdi. The road, which has long suffered from potholes, erosion, and general wear due to heavy usage and inadequate maintenance, is expected to see comprehensive upgrades including drainage improvements, pavement strengthening, and possibly other enhancements to make it more durable and functional.
The move comes amid ongoing efforts by the state government to address infrastructure deficits that have affected mobility and economic activity in the capital city. Improved road conditions in administrative zones are seen as essential not only for daily operations but also for boosting the overall efficiency of governance and public service delivery.
While specific details on the full scope of works—such as the exact length of road to be reconstructed, contract value, contractor involved, and projected completion timeline—were not disclosed during the flag-off ceremony, government sources indicated that additional information would be released in the coming days. This is expected to include technical specifications and milestones to keep residents and stakeholders informed.
The reconstruction of State Secretariat Road is being viewed by many as a welcome step toward restoring Makurdi’s urban road network, which has been a frequent source of complaints from motorists and pedestrians alike. As the project progresses, residents are hopeful that it will deliver lasting improvements and set a positive precedent for similar interventions on other critical routes in the state capital.
The state government has reiterated its commitment to prioritizing infrastructure development as a cornerstone of its agenda to drive progress and enhance the quality of life for Benue people.
