The historic Gbagir Market in Tyuluv, Ukum Local Government Area, has officially reopened today after being deserted for over three years. The market, which fell silent due to repeated attacks by bandits and herdsmen, was brought back to life by the efforts of Hon. Jonathan Modi, the Executive Chairman of Ukum Local Government, in collaboration with the Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormen Alia.
The market had been abandoned following a series of violent incidents that rendered the area unsafe for commercial activities. However, since assuming office, Hon. Modi, working closely with Governor Alia, has tirelessly restored peace and security in the community. This was achieved by ensuring a strong presence of security operatives, creating a safe atmosphere for residents to return to their normal lives and livelihoods.
During the reopening ceremony, Hon. Modi assured the people of Ukum that external aggressors would no longer be allowed to threaten or disrupt the peace. “We will resist any form of attack on our people. I assure you today that you can confidently return to market activities without fear. In addition, I hereby place a ban on all forms of taxation in this market until further notice,” he declared.
The reopening marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts of the present administration to restore Ukum to its place of pride and prosperity. The Council Chairman’s commitment to the community’s safety and economic revival was met with optimism by attendees, who see this as a step toward a brighter future.
The event was coordinated by Samuel Terkuma Atsua, Special Assistant on media and public communications, from the office of the Executive Chairman of Ukum Local Government. As the market resumes operations, residents are hopeful for a sustained period of peace and growth in the region.
