A former media aide to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, Mr. Atu Terver, has firmly rejected circulating social media allegations that appointees of the governor failed to respond adequately during public demands for justice following the killing of Miss Emmanuella Ahenjir.
The incident involving Ahenjir, a final-year student who was fatally struck by a stray bullet during a police stop-and-search operation in Makurdi in May 2025, triggered widespread outrage, protests, and calls for accountability from security agencies. Social media activist Ukan Kurugh amplified these concerns in a viral live broadcast, accusing the governor’s appointees of indifference amid the agitation.
In his response, Terver described the claims as misleading and insisted that concrete actions were indeed taken by certain officials. He emphasized that engagements were made with relevant security agencies to address the matter, while efforts were also directed toward managing the protests that erupted in the aftermath of the tragic event.
The former aide’s rebuttal comes amid ongoing public scrutiny over the handling of high-profile cases involving loss of life and perceived lapses in official response. The killing of Ahenjir had sparked demonstrations in Makurdi, with protesters demanding thorough investigations and an end to incidents of police brutality.
Terver’s statement seeks to clarify the administration’s position and counter narratives suggesting inaction on the part of the governor’s team. As discussions continue online and within Benue communities, the case remains a sensitive topic highlighting broader issues of security, justice, and public trust in governance.
Authorities have previously confirmed that investigations into Ahenjir’s death were launched by the Benue State Police Command, with assurances that those found culpable would face appropriate consequences. The latest intervention from the ex-media aide underscores efforts to address misinformation surrounding the government’s role in the matter.
