A massive fire outbreak has destroyed significant parts of the Mobile Police Force (MOPOL) Squadron 13 premises in Makurdi, Benue State capital, including administrative offices and the unit’s armoury. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, January 4, 2026, with flames spreading rapidly and engulfing key sections of the facility.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the outbreak through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, who acknowledged awareness of the incident but stated that comprehensive details were still being gathered. “Yes, I am aware of the fire outbreak at the MOPOL 13 facility in Makurdi, but I will get back to you,” she told journalists.
Eyewitness accounts describe the fire starting around 10 a.m. from the Squadron Commander’s office. One anonymous officer on morning duty recounted noticing smoke emanating from the office, followed quickly by heavy flames. Efforts to alert superiors and contact the fire service were made, but the blaze had already consumed much of the structure by the time responders arrived.
Viral videos circulating on social media show the facility in ruins, with the armoury and several offices reduced to ashes. No casualties have been reported so far.
In response to the destruction, Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 4, Zacharia Achinyan, visited the site on Monday for an on-the-spot assessment and directed an immediate and thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The AIG expressed concern over the incident and reassured the public that security measures remain intact.
As investigations continue, the full extent of the damage, including potential losses in the armoury, is yet to be officially assessed. This event raises questions about fire safety protocols in critical security installations and underscores the need for swift remedial actions to restore operational capacity at the squadron.
