The Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State has taken a significant step toward bolstering its security framework through a collaborative initiative between Local Government Chairman Hon. (Amb) James Melvin Ejeh and the Nigerian Navy Maritime Component. Announced on Monday, October 6, 2025, this security upgrade aims to address persistent challenges in the region’s riverine areas following a tragic boat mishap that claimed five lives.
As part of this partnership, the Nigerian Navy has deployed gunboats to conduct enhanced patrols along the Agatu waterways. This move is designed to improve safety and security for residents, farmers, and traders who rely on the river for movement and commerce. The initiative responds directly to the recent incident, reflecting a commitment to preventing future tragedies.
“The safety and well-being of our constituents remain our paramount concern,” Hon. Ejeh stated. “We are optimistic that this partnership will enhance the overall safety and security of our waterways, ensuring better protection for residents, farmers, and traders who rely on the river for movement and commerce.”
Chairman Ejeh emphasized the collaborative effort, noting the partnership with the Nigerian Navy as a significant step toward achieving the government’s goals. “We are committed to working with relevant stakeholders to ensure the security and prosperity of our local government. This partnership with the Nigerian Navy is a significant step towards achieving our goals, and we look forward to continued collaboration.”
The deployment of naval assets is expected to serve as a strong deterrent against criminal activities and minimize risks associated with riverine transport. The enhanced patrols are anticipated to create a safer environment, allowing residents to go about their daily activities without fear.
This security upgrade marks a proactive response to the region’s challenges, with Hon. Ejeh expressing confidence that the partnership will yield lasting improvements. As the initiative unfolds, the Agatu community looks forward to a more secure and prosperous future along its vital waterways.
