The Catholic Bishop of Otukpo Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, on Tuesday paid a pastoral visit to St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Ojije, Utonkon, to offer comfort and spiritual support to parishioners shaken by the recent abduction of several worshippers.
The incident occurred during a night vigil at the parish on February 6, 2026, when gunmen reportedly invaded the church premises and abducted multiple faithful. The attack has left the community in grief and heightened anxiety amid ongoing security concerns in parts of Benue State.
During his visit, Bishop Apochi expressed profound sympathy to the affected families, the parish community, and the entire diocese. He assured worshippers that the diocesan leadership is in close collaboration with security agencies and local stakeholders to facilitate the safe and swift release of the kidnapped victims. The bishop appealed strongly for calm, urging parishioners to remain hopeful, united, and steadfast in prayer while trusting in divine intervention and the efforts of those working for their release.
Bishop Apochi also commended the prompt and courageous response of the local youths, the village head, and other community members who acted swiftly in the aftermath of the incident. He encouraged them to sustain their vigilance and remain deeply committed to promoting peace, mutual support, and collective security in the area.
The pastoral visit concluded with an episcopal blessing imparted to the congregation. The bishop was accompanied by Fr. Michael Oko and Fr. Emmanuel Ejeh. Also present were the parish priest of St. Paul’s Parish, Utonkon, Fr. Boniface Ogwuche, and his assistant, Fr. Fredrick Ondoma.
The visit underscored the diocese’s solidarity with the people of Ojije and surrounding communities at a difficult time. As efforts continue to secure the release of the abducted worshippers, Bishop Apochi’s message of hope, prayer, and unity is resonating widely among the faithful, who have been encouraged to stay strong in faith and community despite the trauma of recent events.
