The Benue State Urban Development Board (BSUDB) has taken significant steps to align its developmental agenda with community stakeholders, as evidenced by a recent meeting with Jukun community leaders. On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the Board’s General Manager and Town Planner, Ternongo Mede, received the delegation in a courtesy call that underscored the importance of collaborative urban planning.

Chief Igi Apake and HRH Tanko Omale Ako-Gyogo expressed their gratitude to Mede for his dedication to urban development. They highlighted the challenges faced by the Jukun community in Wurukum, Awe Street, and parts of North Bank around the old bridge. Engr. Adakole Sunday, part of the delegation, sought clarity on the fate of remaining land expanses after the government’s removal of portions for federal road construction near the former Rice Mill, Wurukum. He also commended Mede’s efforts in driving these initiatives forward.

Mede welcomed the leaders and urged them to educate their communities on the importance of adhering to legal building processes. He emphasized the need to obtain proper approvals before embarking on any construction projects. The meeting also clarified that a 90-meter stretch, 45 meters from either side of the road along the highway under construction, falls under federal government jurisdiction, which remains the sole focus of governmental interest.

The BSUDB does not grant land ownership but serves to ensure citizens comply with the state’s intricate development plans. This approach aims to transform Makurdi into a mega urban center with global standards. The board stressed that illegal developments have caused significant issues, including the destruction of access roads, drainages, flooding, and more.
