Benue State has taken a significant step toward digital transformation by signing a partnership agreement with the Cisco Networking Academy. The deal aims to expand access to high-quality digital skills training for young people and civil servants across the state.

The agreement was finalized on the sidelines of the Cisco International Systems Annual Conference for the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, held in Dubai from January 13 to 15, 2026. Representing Benue State, the Managing Director and CEO of the Benue Digital Infrastructure Company (BDIC), Gbande-Hembaor Terwase—who also serves as President and CEO of AfDIC—signed the deal.

Under the partnership, Benue plans to train approximately 23,000 young people every two years using Cisco’s accredited curriculum. The focus areas include computer networking, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital literacy, and emerging technologies. The initiative seeks to boost employability, enable remote work opportunities, and open doors to global technology jobs for Benue’s youth.

This collaboration aligns closely with Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s administration priorities, where technology skills form a cornerstone of the state’s development strategy. In his first year in office, the governor announced ambitious programs, including digital skills training for 10,000 youths and e-governance and digital literacy training for over 40,000 civil servants. These efforts aim to enhance efficiency, transparency, and service delivery in the public sector.

The Cisco partnership will further support ongoing upskilling of government workers and accelerate the state’s shift toward online public services and data-driven administration. Cisco Networking Academy, operating in more than 190 countries, stands as one of the world’s largest technology training platforms. Its certifications enjoy wide recognition from employers and educational institutions globally.

Analysts view such initiatives as vital for Nigerian states grappling with youth unemployment and the demands of a digital economy. While the potential benefits are substantial—including better preparation of the workforce for future jobs—the long-term success will hinge on consistent funding, effective implementation, and sustained commitment.

The announcement, shared via the official Benue State Government Facebook page, underscores a forward-looking approach amid broader challenges in the region. By investing in digital education, Benue aims to position its young population competitively in an increasingly tech-driven world and foster economic modernization.
