In a significant crackdown on economic sabotage, the Benue State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested six individuals accused of vandalizing PHCN/TCN power transmission cables at Apir, opposite the NNPC Depot in Makurdi.
The arrests were made on December 28, 2025, during a coordinated surveillance operation involving NSCDC personnel and local youths from the Apir settlement. The suspects, identified as Shiaondo David Iorshenge (the prime suspect), Terungwa Asombo, Nomyar Bemdoo, Tyoakura Apino Christopher, Terhemba Iortuhwa Victor, and Musa Abdullahi, were caught in the act of attempting to destroy critical electricity infrastructure.
This operation follows stern warnings issued earlier by the Benue State NSCDC Commandant, CC La Bitrus, who had cautioned criminal elements against exploiting the Yuletide season to target national assets. In a proactive measure, the Commandant deployed 1,780 personnel across all 23 local government areas of the state to ensure public safety and protect government infrastructure during the festive period.
Commandant Bitrus commended her officers for their dedication and diligence while urging host communities to actively monitor and safeguard assets that directly benefit them. She issued a strong message to potential vandals: “Let this be a clear warning to enemies of national security: Benue State will not be a safe haven for your nefarious activities. Protection of critical national assets and infrastructures is non-negotiable.”
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to face prosecution in court upon conclusion. This arrest underscores the NSCDC’s commitment to combating vandalism, which continues to pose a major threat to Nigeria’s power sector and economic stability, particularly in regions reliant on stable electricity supply. Community collaboration has proven vital in such efforts, highlighting the importance of public vigilance in safeguarding national resources.
