The political atmosphere in Benue State was briefly stirred on Thursday following a social media write-up suggesting that Governor Hyacinth Alia was planning to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) and that the state APC chairman, Hon. Maurice Orwough, had secretly convened a meeting with opposition figures on the governor’s directive.

In a swift and blistering response, Mr. Ernest Tortiv, Personal Assistant on Communications to Hon. Maurice Orwough, described the publication as “mischievous, baseless and a poorly crafted piece of blackmail” designed only to attract cheap attention.

Tortiv, in a statement posted on Friday morning, categorically debunked every claim made by the writer identified as Asom Jerry:

“Governor Hyacinth Alia remains the remains firmly in control of APC structures in Benue State. There is absolutely no truth in the insinuation that he is shopping for another political platform. His Excellency will confidently seek re-election on the platform of the APC, a party he has strengthened through purposeful leadership and good governance.”

On the allegation that Hon. Orwough convened a meeting with members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on the governor’s instruction, the aide said it was a complete fabrication.

“Since assuming office, the Council Chairman (as he is popularly called) has never, in any capacity, convened any meeting with ADC members on the directive of the governor or otherwise. His open engagements with stakeholders cut across party lines and are rooted in mentorship, goodwill and mutual respect, not in clandestine political realignment.”

Tortiv reminded the public that the same writer had earlier peddled a false story about a “sour relationship” and “failed car business” between Governor Alia and Hon. Orwough, claims he never substantiated even after public challenge.

He described the latest piece as nothing more than “a desperate attempt to remain relevant by telling lies,” adding that such fabrications have failed and will continue to fail.

Concluding, the aide urged Benue people to disregard the rumours and focus on the solid unity existing between Governor Alia and the state APC leadership under Hon. Maurice Orwough, insisting that the party is stronger and more prosperous today than ever before.

As of press time, the original post by Asom Jerry had attracted sharp criticism from APC faithful across the state, with many calling it a it a recycled tale from known opposition elements uncomfortable with the growing popularity of the Alia administration.
