One Passenger Killed as Gunmen Attack Commercial Bus in Ohimini, Benue

Benue State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of a 30-year-old passenger following a deadly ambush on a commercial bus by suspected armed bandits in the early hours of Thursday, February 5, 2026.

The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. in Ojali community, Ohimini Local Government Area, when unknown gunmen emerged from the bush and opened fire on the moving vehicle. The victim, identified as Sanusi Danmamaji, was fatally shot during the attack.

According to a police source, the bus—an 18-seater Hummer bearing registration details not fully disclosed—was driven by one Musa Jibrin. The assailants fired indiscriminately from the roadside bush, killing the passenger instantly. No other passengers were reported abducted or taken hostage by the attackers.

In swift response, the Divisional Police Officer in Ohimini deployed patrol teams and tactical operatives to the scene. Security personnel documented the crime scene with photographs, conducted a thorough search of surrounding bushes in pursuit of the gunmen, and ensured the area was cleared for safe passage.

After security clearance, the driver and surviving passengers were allowed to continue their journey. The matter has since been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for comprehensive investigation.

The Benue State Police Command, while expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, urged travellers across the state to remain vigilant, avoid travelling during odd hours where possible, and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest security agency.

The attack adds to the growing list of violent incidents targeting commuters and vulnerable road users in parts of Benue, where armed groups continue to exploit remote stretches of highways and rural routes. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to apprehending the perpetrators and restoring safety on the state’s roads.
