Benue Government Awards Contract for 5km Asphalt Roads in Each LGA Headquarters

In a major boost to rural infrastructure, the Benue State Government under Governor Hyacinth Alia has awarded contracts for the construction of five kilometers of asphalt roads in the headquarters of each of the state’s 23 local government areas. The initiative, aligned with the governor’s directive to ensure equitable development across all councils, marks the first phase covering 19 selected LGAs: Guma, Katsina-Ala, Otukpo, Gboko, Makurdi, Kwande, Obi, Oju, Buruku, Ushongo, Logo, Gwer-East, Tarka, Agatu, Okpokwu, Ado, Ukum, Vandeikya, and Konshisha.

During a contract signing ceremony, Director of Civil Engineering in the Ministry of Works, Housing and Urban Development, Engineer Abraham Wombo, briefed journalists on the project details. He explained that the roads are designed to high asphalt standards, mirroring the quality of ongoing rehabilitations in the state capital, Makurdi. The governor instructed close collaboration with local government authorities to site the roads strategically within each LGA headquarters.

Engineer Wombo revealed that after applications from reputable contractors and rigorous screening, the contract was awarded to Mersses A.M Construction Agency. He expressed confidence in timely completion, noting that work is expected to continue even through the festive period. Flag-off ceremonies are scheduled to begin on Monday in Otukpo, Gboko, and Kwande.

Local government chairmen from Gboko (Elias Torsee), Katsina-Ala (Justin Shaku), Kwande (Vitalis Neji), and Tarka (Roy Terna Ashirga) reacted with enthusiasm, describing the project as unprecedented since the return to democracy in Nigeria. They praised Governor Alia for the inclusive approach and pledged full cooperation with the contractor and ministry to deliver quality roads that benefit the masses.

This project forms part of the administration’s broader agenda to spread development beyond urban centers, enhancing connectivity, economic activity, and accessibility in rural communities across Benue State.
