Police Launch Investigation into Death of Miss Janet Usange in Gwer East, Benue State

The Benue State Police Command has initiated a probe into the mysterious death of Miss Janet Usange (also referred to as Usange Janet), a young woman whose body was recovered from River Agbuu in the Mbabur community of Gwer East Local Government Area. She had been reported missing since December 11, 2025, after leaving home to work on a farm where she resided with her elder sister and brother-in-law.

Search efforts intensified when she failed to return, leading to the discovery of her slippers, wheelbarrow, and farm tools at the site, which immediately raised alarms among family and community members. Her body was eventually spotted floating in the river on Sunday, December 15, by a local resident who quickly notified others.

The incident has sparked significant tension in the area, with allegations pointing to foul play surrounding the circumstances of her death. Reports indicate that suspected relatives of the deceased later set fire to a house belonging to a community member, forcing the occupants to flee for safety. This act of reprisal has heightened fears of escalating violence.

Community leaders and residents have urgently appealed to security agencies and Gwer East Local Government authorities for swift intervention to restore calm and prevent a further breakdown of law and order. They have also called for a thorough, impartial investigation to uncover the truth and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area confirmed the recovery of the body and stated that investigations are actively ongoing. As the probe continues, the community remains on edge, hoping for clarity and peace amid this tragic loss.
