In a swift and decisive operation, the Benue State Police Command has arrested five young women implicated in the brutal assault of another female victim, an incident captured on video that went viral across social media platforms in recent days.

The attack, which reportedly took place along George Akume Way in Makurdi, sparked widespread outrage online as the graphic footage circulated rapidly, showing the victim being beaten and humiliated by a group of girls. The video triggered immediate calls for justice from members of the public, who condemned the act as yet another disturbing case of mob violence and gender-based brutality.

Acting on the public outcry and intelligence reports, the Makurdi B Division, under the leadership of its Divisional Police Officer, Sewuese, moved quickly to identify and round up the suspects. All five girls allegedly involved in the assault are now in police custody, where they are expected to spend the night as investigations continue.

Police authorities commended the officers who led the arrest — Japhet, Adamgbe Sylvester, and Ukan Kurugh — for their professionalism and rapid response. Sources within the command say the operation was carried out without incident and that efforts are ongoing to gather more evidence, including statements from witnesses and possible additional footage.

Community reactions have been a mix of relief and cautious optimism. Many residents have praised the police for acting promptly, seeing the arrests as a rare but welcome sign that law enforcement in Benue State is beginning to respond effectively to crimes amplified through social media. “This kind of quick action is what we’ve been asking for,” one local youth leader told reporters. “When people know they can’t hide behind viral videos, maybe this madness will reduce.”

While the motive behind the assault remains under investigation, preliminary reports suggest it may have stemmed from a personal dispute that escalated violently. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course, stressing that jungle justice will not be tolerated.

As the suspects remain in detention tonight, many in Makurdi are hoping this case marks a turning point — a small but meaningful step toward restoring law, order, and accountability in a state that has seen its share of violent incidents in recent times.

Justice, it seems, may finally be catching up with those who thought the camera would only make them famous, not fugitives.
