In a move that has excited residents of Makurdi and beyond, the Benue State Government has commenced the full rehabilitation and upgrading of the iconic Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) Square, with a clear mandate to transform the historic venue into a world-class events and recreational destination.

Hon Emmanuel Terungwa, a prominent voice in the state, shared the cheering news on his social media page, highlighting that Governor Hyacinth Alia has personally prioritized the project due to the square’s deep cultural and social significance to the people of Benue. The governor reportedly promised to bring the facility up to international standards, complete with modern amenities that will make it suitable for large-scale national and international events.

For years, IBB Square has been the traditional heart of Makurdi, hosting independence celebrations, political rallies, religious crusades, musical concerts, and countless memorable public gatherings. However, decades of use and minimal maintenance had left the once-vibrant arena in a sorry state, with cracked pavements, overgrown weeds, poor lighting, and dilapidated structures.

The new upgrade is part of Governor Alia’s broader vision to reposition Benue State through massive infrastructural renewal, economic revitalization, and urban beautification. Sources close to the project say the redesign will include expanded seating, state-of-the-art lighting, green landscaping, modern convenience facilities, and flexible spaces that can accommodate everything from trade fairs to international conferences.

Photos circulating online show the governor and top government officials already on site, reviewing architectural plans and inspecting ongoing preliminary work. The presence of heavy machinery and construction crews confirms that the project has moved beyond mere promises into active execution.

Reactions from Benue citizens have been overwhelmingly positive. “This is long overdue. IBB Square is our pride. Seeing it come back to life under Governor Alia is emotional,” one Makurdi resident commented online. Another wrote, “Kule ne Alia ave!” – a popular Tiv phrase meaning “Well done, Alia, greetings!” that has become the unofficial slogan of appreciation for the governor’s visible projects across the state.

While an official completion timeline has not been announced, the speed with which the administration has moved from announcement to mobilization suggests the Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia-led government is determined to deliver the upgraded IBB Square well ahead of the next major public celebration.

When completed, the revitalized IBB Square is expected to not only restore pride to the state capital but also boost tourism, create jobs, and provide a world-class venue that can attract events currently taken to Abuja, Enugu, or Jos.

For a state working hard to shake off years of stagnation, this project is more than just bricks and pavement, it’s a bold statement that Benue is open for business, open for beauty, and open for greatness.
