The cost of renting apartments in Benue State has skyrocketed to levels rivaling Abuja and Lagos, prompting residents to demand urgent intervention from the State House of Assembly. A Facebook post from earlier today at 8:22 AM highlights the growing crisis, with tenants expressing frustration over stalled efforts to regulate rental prices.

Under the leadership of former Speaker Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh, petitions led to meetings between landlords, agents, tenants, and stakeholders, resulting in proposed solutions and the beginning of regulatory code development. However, following a recent change in leadership, the process has reportedly stalled, leaving tenants stranded and advocates dismayed.

Frustrated residents are now calling on new Speaker Hon. Berger Alfred Emberg and lawmakers like Hon. Simon Gabo and Hon. Cephas Dyako to revive or redesign rent control measures to protect ordinary people from crushing costs. One resident warned, “With hardship everywhere and building materials expensive, rent in Benue shouldn’t be higher than Abuja and Lagos,” emphasizing that silence from lawmakers will only deepen the crisis.
