The Chief Medical Director of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, has reaffirmed a zero-tolerance policy on medical negligence and unprofessional conduct, warning that any staff member who endangers patients’ lives risks immediate dismissal.
Speaking during a staff engagement held on Friday, 31st July, 2026, in his conference room, the consultant gynaecologist stressed that safeguarding patients’ lives remains the hospital’s foremost responsibility and the guiding principle of his administration.
Dr. Hwande expressed concern that some workers misunderstand the unique demands of healthcare delivery, noting that hospital management cannot be equated with routine civil service operations because patient safety requires strict discipline, accountability and prompt professional action. He warned that any employee found negligent in a manner that jeopardises patients’ lives would be removed from service immediately, stressing that no one can replace the breadwinner of a family whose life is lost through avoidable negligence.
“Any staff found negligent in a manner that puts patients’ lives at risk will be shown the way out immediately. We must do the right thing at all times,” he warned.
Reflecting on his personal journey, Dr. Hwande disclosed that losing his mother at an early age shaped his dedication to compassionate service, discipline, excellence and values, which continue to guide his leadership and decision-making.
The CMD revealed that he has sufficient grounds to dismiss some staff already facing disciplinary measures or on suspension. However, he maintained that his objective is not victimisation but to institutionalise best practices and uphold the highest professional standards. Dr. Hwande pledged to sanction any staff found wanting while protecting the integrity of the hospital. He said the management remains committed to quality healthcare, professionalism and accountability in line with the vision of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.
