Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court Abuja, on Thursday, July 16, 2026, adjourned the trial of former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, till September 25, 2026, for the adoption of final written addresses.

The adjournment followed the absence of Suswam, the first defendant, on health grounds. Prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, informed the court that the matter was slated for the adoption of final written addresses but noted a letter from Suswam’s counsel, Paul Erokoro, SAN, informing him of the defendant’s inability to attend court.
Prosecution counsel urged the court not to grant adjournment and to proceed with the adoption of addresses, expressing frustration over delays in a case that is 11 years old. Jacobs argued that the defendants were making a mockery of the justice system.
Counsel to the second defendant, Audu Agunga, SAN, stated that the excuses suggested the defendant needed rest and indicated they were not opposed to the adjournment in the interest of justice.
Justice Lifu eventually adjourned the matter to September 25 for adoption of the final written addresses. The case, which has seen multiple judges, continues to attract attention due to its prolonged nature.
