Tension has gripped Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State following the tragic deaths of two teenage girls in an alleged arson incident in the early hours of Monday, July 6, 2026.

According to preliminary reports, the suspect, identified as Mbayeghe, visited the residence of her lover, Aondoyima Ierkwagh, on Sunday night. A disagreement reportedly broke out after she was asked to leave, with Mbayeghe allegedly suspecting the presence of another woman. In a fit of rage, she is accused of setting a traditional round hut on fire, believing the other woman was inside. Tragically, the two young girls were asleep in the hut at the time.
One of the girls died at the scene while the second succumbed to injuries later in hospital. The deceased are daughters of Aondoyima Ierkwagh, who hails from Tsehe in Tongov, Katsina-Ala LGA, but resides in the Kaffe area of Zaki-Biam in Ukum LGA. Their mother was reportedly away in Taraba State for farming activities.

The suspect allegedly attempted to flee but was apprehended near Tse-Dugwer Village by members of the Volunteer Guards and handed over to the police. She is currently in custody undergoing interrogation as investigations continue.
The heartbreaking incident has shocked residents of Zaki-Biam and surrounding communities. Community leaders have called for calm, urging residents to allow the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
Many have used the opportunity to highlight the need for better emotional self-control, responsible parenting, mental health support, and the protection of children from adult conflicts.
