INEC Extends Continuous Voter Registration by Two Weeks, Introduces Self-Service Option for First-Time Voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a two-week extension of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and the introduction of a new self-service online registration option for eligible first-time voters.

In a press release, INEC stated that following a review of the ongoing CVR and feedback from state offices, political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders, the Commission approved the extension to give more eligible citizens the opportunity to register.

The nationwide CVR exercise began on 18th August 2025 and was originally scheduled to end on 10th July 2026. It has now been extended to Friday, 24th July 2026.

As part of efforts to enhance accessibility and innovation in the electoral process, INEC is also introducing a self-service registration portal for first-time voters. The new service will launch on Wednesday, 8th July 2026, and will be available through the Commission’s dedicated CVR portal at cvr.inecnigeria.org, which includes a step-by-step guide.

The self-service option enables eligible citizens to initiate and complete their voter registration process—including biometric capture—using their personal devices from anywhere, without needing to visit an INEC office. The system features robust identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks to maintain the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

INEC urged all eligible Nigerians yet to register to take advantage of the extended period and the new technology-driven option. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible, inclusive, and accessible voter registration process while leveraging technology to improve citizens’ experience.

The announcement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chair, IVEC, on 3rd July 2026.
