In a press release, INEC stated that following a review of the ongoing CVR and feedback from state offices, political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders, the Commission approved the extension to give more eligible citizens the opportunity to register.
The nationwide CVR exercise began on 18th August 2025 and was originally scheduled to end on 10th July 2026. It has now been extended to Friday, 24th July 2026.
As part of efforts to enhance accessibility and innovation in the electoral process, INEC is also introducing a self-service registration portal for first-time voters. The new service will launch on Wednesday, 8th July 2026, and will be available through the Commission’s dedicated CVR portal at cvr.inecnigeria.org, which includes a step-by-step guide.
The self-service option enables eligible citizens to initiate and complete their voter registration process—including biometric capture—using their personal devices from anywhere, without needing to visit an INEC office. The system features robust identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks to maintain the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

The announcement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chair, IVEC, on 3rd July 2026.
