The Director General of the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Capt. Alex Badeh, has led a team of investigators to Wadata in Benue State for an on-the-spot safety assessment following a recent boat accident that claimed 11 lives.
The NSIB delegation was received by Deputy Governor Dr. Samuel Ode and later met with Governor Hyacinth Alia, who commended the Bureau for its swift response. The governor urged the NSIB to strengthen its presence in the state for better safety advocacy on the River Benue.
Capt. Badeh condoled with the bereaved families and noted that many waterway accidents are preventable through improved safety awareness, responsible operations, and stronger collaboration among stakeholders.
The team engaged boat operators and community leaders to gather first-hand accounts and insights into local safety practices and challenges.
The NSIB investigation aims to produce safety recommendations that will help strengthen safety culture and prevent future accidents on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
