Early today, a concerned resident visited the Wankyan stream crossing near Tyowanye main market and observed a serious infrastructure risk that requires urgent attention.

The stream passes close to the commercial centre of Tyowanye and flows beneath the federal highway linking Yandev through Tyowanye to Ugbema, a critical route for movement, trade, and daily life. At the crossing point, the situation is already deteriorating.

The stream channel has widened significantly due to erosion. The banks are collapsing, and in some areas, the flow is beginning to affect the base of the road itself. The existing double culvert appears insufficient to handle the volume of water during heavy rainfall.

A major contributing factor is the absence of a coordinated drainage system in Tyowanye. When it rains, runoff from across the town is not properly directed. Instead, it flows into the stream with increasing force, gradually eroding the surrounding soil and weakening the structure over time.

If this continues:
– The culvert will deteriorate further
– Sections of the road may eventually fail
– Movement and trade will be disrupted
– Economic activity around Tyowanye market will be affected

This is not a distant risk. It is already developing.

The important point is that this is a manageable problem, when approached properly:
– A coordinated drainage system to guide runoff
– Stabilisation of the stream banks
– Assessment and possible upgrade of the culvert
– Routine maintenance to prevent blockage and overflow

These are practical and well-understood interventions. This is the kind of issue that requires proper understanding, careful planning, and disciplined execution if it is to be resolved sustainably.

This is a situation that directly affects the people, movement, and economic activity around Tyowanye, and it deserves careful attention.
