Residents of the High-Level area in Makurdi, Benue State, are applauding a group of alert young men who, on Thursday afternoon, November 13, 2025, thwarted an attempted phone theft and apprehended the suspect on the spot.
The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Ahagba, was reportedly caught red-handed trying to snatch a mobile phone from a passerby. Eyewitnesses say the man had already seized the device and was attempting to flee when the youths intervened, quickly restraining him before he could escape.
The swift action prevented what could have been another successful street theft in a city that has seen a noticeable uptick in petty crimes, especially as the festive season approaches.
Local sources say the suspect was subsequently handed over to law enforcement officials for further investigation and prosecution. No injuries were reported during the arrest.
Community members have praised the youths for their vigilance and willingness to step in, with many describing the incident as a positive example of citizens taking responsibility for neighborhood safety.
Authorities and residents alike are using the event to remind people to stay extra cautious during the coming weeks, a period traditionally associated with increased incidents of pickpocketing, phone snatching, and other minor offenses as crowds grow and visitors flood the city.
The timely intervention in High-Level serves as both a success story and a wake-up call: community alertness remains one of the most effective tools against street crime in Makurdi.
