The Tiv Youths Organisation (Worldwide) has petitioned the Police Service Commission (PSC) over an alleged attack on members of the Edo State Executive Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Benue of complicity and collaboration with criminal elements.
In a petition routed through the Inspector-General of Police, the group claimed that officers attached to the Aliade Police Division—particularly those at the Ashina Checkpoint—recruited and sponsored hoodlums who carried out a brutal and unprovoked assault on the APC officials.
The organisation described the incident as disturbing, asserting that law enforcement personnel entrusted with protecting lives and property allegedly worked with criminals to harass and intimidate law-abiding citizens. It emphasised that the affected Edo APC EXCO members are actively involved in humanitarian interventions, including rescuing trafficked Tiv indigenes, facilitating their return home, and championing community development initiatives.
The Tiv Youths tabled a set of “non-negotiable demands,” including:
– Immediate sack of officers allegedly involved, particularly the Divisional Police Officer of Aliade Division, pending a thorough investigation
– Full payment of medical bills incurred by the injured victims
– Arrest and prosecution of the hoodlums
– Withdrawal of civilians from the Ashina Checkpoint
– Formal public apology published in at least two national dailies
The group warned that failure to address the matter transparently and decisively could compel it to explore all lawful avenues for redress, while reaffirming its commitment to peace and the rule of law.
No official response has been received from the Nigeria Police Force, PSC, or the Edo State APC chapter as of the time of this report. The petition has heightened concerns over alleged police misconduct and inter-ethnic or political tensions along border communities between Benue and Edo States.
