Students of ATM Science and Technical College in Jato-Aka were overcome with grief yesterday as they mourned the death of their classmate, Miss Songo Gloria. The 17-year-old was among those shot by soldiers during an incident on September 30, 2025, succumbing to her injuries in the early hours of the following day. The tragic event has sparked outrage and calls for accountability.
Grieving students held an impromptu vigil, carrying placards and chanting for justice. Describing Miss Gloria as a quiet, hard-working pupil whose life was cut short, one anonymous student told reporters, “Tears can’t stop rolling down our faces. She was our friend. We want answers and we want those responsible held accountable.”
Student leaders have called for an independent investigation into the shootings and demanded the immediate withdrawal of soldiers from Jato-Aka. “In one voice: we don’t need soldiers in Jato-Aka again,” a representative declared, urging state and federal authorities to act swiftly to prevent further loss of civilian life. Community members and local leaders echoed this sentiment, appealing for calm while also demanding justice.
Officials from the school and local government have yet to issue a full statement. The family of Miss Gloria has requested privacy as arrangements are made. Human rights organizations and civil society groups monitoring the situation have been urged to visit the area and document events.
The incident has left the community reeling, with students and residents insisting that justice for Miss Gloria and all victims of the September 30 incident is non-negotiable.
