Fear and anxiety gripped the Tse Ati community in Mbabuande, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State, on Monday following reports of suspected armed herdsmen moving in numbers around the axis.
Local sources disclosed that the individuals were sighted in groups, prompting immediate concern among residents who have long grappled with recurring farmer-herder clashes in the region. The sightings triggered calls for heightened vigilance as communities braced for any potential threat to public safety.
At the time of the report, there was no official confirmation of any attack or violent incident. However, residents emphasised the need for proactive measures, urging security agencies and local authorities to closely monitor the situation and prevent any possible breach of peace.
Concerned citizens also directed appeals to the Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area, Hon. Ormin Torsar Victor, calling on him to prioritise the safety of communities within the council and liaise promptly with security operatives to forestall emerging threats.
Efforts to obtain comments from local security officials were ongoing as of press time. The development comes amid lingering sensitivities over pastoralist movements in Benue, where strict anti-open grazing laws remain in force, often leading to friction when perceived violations occur.
Community leaders and residents alike hope for swift intervention to de-escalate tensions and restore calm in the area.
