The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the assassination of All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Ejeh Ijachi, in Ugboju, Otukpo Local Government Area. The arrest was announced by Police spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, on Monday evening, following a manhunt launched shortly after the attack.
“Yes, the incident occurred and one suspect has been arrested and is in custody. Investigation is ongoing to track down the remaining suspects,” Edet stated. The arrested suspect is currently undergoing interrogation, with intensified efforts to capture other members of the gang.
The arrest follows earlier confirmation by Otukpo Council Chairman, Maxwell Ogiri, who condemned the killing and pledged support for security agencies to ensure justice. Eyewitnesses reported that Ijachi was ambushed and shot dead in the early hours of Monday by gunmen who had reportedly trailed him home after an outing. The attackers arrived on motorcycles and fired at close range.
This incident has heightened concerns over security in the region, with authorities working diligently to bring all perpetrators to justice. The police continue their investigation, and updates are expected as the case develops.
