A man identified as Mr. Aondohemba from Mbagbgba district in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State has been arrested following allegations that he beat his wife, Mrs. Ngizan Aondohhemba, to death in a prolonged domestic assault.
According to a detailed account shared by social activist D’naked Elder Sughnen Yaaya on February 23, 2026, the incident occurred at the couple’s residence in New Nyanyan, near the double poles area close to Bola filling station. The family of the deceased reached out to the activist the day before yesterday, reporting that neighbors and relatives allege the husband subjected his wife to hours of severe beating, locked her inside a room, seized her phone, and then left the premises to drink at a local spot.
Witnesses reportedly told the family that the woman cried out for help over an extended period while confined in the locked room. Fearing intervention due to the husband’s alleged aggression, neighbors hesitated to act. It was only after her cries ceased and silence persisted for hours that concerned youths in the area were summoned to check on her. They forced open the door and discovered her lifeless body.
The activist highlighted the husband’s immediate insistence—citing his Muslim faith—that the woman be buried the same day. However, her family rejected the demand and arranged for her body to be moved from Abuja to the Lessel morgue in Ushongo LGA, where it is currently being preserved pending further investigation and eventual burial.
Mr. Aondohemba was reportedly arrested yesterday by security operatives following the outcry. The activist has called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice is served, emphasizing that the case underscores the deadly consequences of unchecked domestic violence.
D’naked Elder Sughnen Yaaya, who has repeatedly used his platform to campaign against gender-based violence, described the incident as part of a disturbing and accelerating trend of domestic killings in the region. He reiterated his ongoing advocacy, stating that domestic violence is claiming lives at an alarming rate and requires urgent collective action from families, communities, and authorities.
As of the latest updates, police have not released an official statement confirming details of the arrest, charges, or autopsy findings. The case has drawn local attention to the persistent issue of intimate partner violence in Benue State, with calls growing for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women, better community response mechanisms, and increased awareness to prevent similar tragedies.
