The family of newlywed Igidi has condemned what it describes as a sustained campaign of cyberbullying, defamation, character assassination and online harassment targeting Igidi and his wife following the announcement of their marriage.
In a press statement released on Saturday, the family said what should have been a joyful celebration had been turned into a “public spectacle” of ridicule, malicious speculation and attacks on the couple’s character. It maintained that the couple are consenting adults who have made a lawful and sacred commitment to one another, describing the online attacks as harmful and an invasion of their privacy and dignity.
The statement called on individuals responsible for allegedly defamatory posts and comments to immediately remove the content, stop further commentary on the family’s private affairs and issue a public apology. The family also appealed to Facebook, Instagram, X and other social media platforms to enforce their policies against harassment and cyberbullying and take action against accounts allegedly responsible for persistent violations.
It further disclosed that the family is consulting its legal team over possible action relating to alleged defamation, cyberbullying and cyberstalking, invasion of privacy and publication of false information. According to the statement, the family has documented the posts, comments and shares in question and is prepared to pursue legal remedies against those who continue the alleged harassment.
The family concluded by calling on Nigerians to respect the couple’s privacy and dignity and to refrain from sharing or engaging with content intended to defame or harass them.
